The word "elephant" appears in Middle English as olyfaunt ( c. As in Mycenaean Greek, Homer used the Greek word to mean ivory, but after the time of Herodotus, it also referred to the animal. It is attested in Mycenaean Greek as e-re-pa (genitive e-re-pa-to) in Linear B syllabic script. The word "elephant" is based on the Latin elephas ( genitive elephantis) ("elephant"), which is the Latinised form of the Greek ἐλέφας ( elephas) (genitive ἐλέφαντος ( elephantos ), probably from a non- Indo-European language, likely Phoenician. Elephants have an iconic status in human culture and have been featured in art, folklore, religion, literature, and popular culture. In the past, they were used in war today, they are often controversially put on display in zoos, or exploited for entertainment in circuses. ![]() Elephants are used as working animals in Asia. Other threats to wild elephants include habitat destruction and conflicts with local people. One of the biggest threats to elephant populations is the ivory trade, as the animals are poached for their ivory tusks. They appear to have self-awareness, and possibly show concern for dying and dead individuals of their kind.Īfrican bush elephants and Asian elephants are listed as endangered and African forest elephants as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Elephant intelligence has been compared with that of primates and cetaceans. They communicate by touch, sight, smell, and sound elephants use infrasound and seismic communication over long distances. Elephants can live up to 70 years in the wild. Calves are the centre of attention in their family groups and rely on their mothers for as long as three years. They enter a state of increased testosterone and aggression known as musth, which helps them gain dominance over other males as well as reproductive success. Adult bulls mostly interact with family groups when looking for a mate. Males (bulls) leave their family groups when they reach puberty and may live alone or with other males. ![]() The leader of a female group, usually the oldest cow, is known as the matriarch. Females (cows) tend to live in family groups, which can consist of one female with her calves or several related females with offspring. Elephants have a fission–fusion society, in which multiple family groups come together to socialise. They are considered to be keystone species, due to their impact on their environments. They are herbivorous, and they stay near water when it is accessible. African elephants have larger ears and concave backs, whereas Asian elephants have smaller ears, and convex or level backs.Įlephants are scattered throughout sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia and are found in different habitats, including savannahs, forests, deserts, and marshes. The large ear flaps assist in maintaining a constant body temperature as well as in communication. ![]() Tusks, which are derived from the incisor teeth, serve both as weapons and as tools for moving objects and digging. The trunk is used for breathing and is prehensile, bringing food and water to the mouth, and grasping objects. Distinctive features of elephants include a long proboscis called a trunk, tusks, large ear flaps, pillar-like legs, and tough but sensitive skin. The order was formerly much more diverse during the Pleistocene, but most species became extinct during the Late Pleistocene epoch. They are the only surviving members of the family Elephantidae and the order Proboscidea. Once everything has been configured properly, the incident responder can initiate a file carve from the Kolide console. This activity also happens when you ask Osquery to generate a file hash for a file larger than the read_max value. If the read_max is set to 100MB and the file you want to upload is 1GB, Osquery will not upload the file. Furthermore, Osquery has another setting called read_max which sets the maximum size of files it can interact with. If Osquery is configured to send 3MB file chunks but NGINX has a client_max_body_size of 1MB it will reject all the data blocks. The configurations provided by the repo for this project are configured for Osquery to send and for NGINX to receive 1MB file chunks. Everyone has to be on the same musical page to play the song in harmony. The various components of this architecture act like a symphony. If you’re curious about how to set up mutual TLS, please see my blog post on: Kolide and Osquery with mutual TLS. That setup will allow arbitrary uploads to the Osquery-file-carve server which can result in a DDOS or more likely the storage backend becoming full. The Osquery-file-carve server can be set up without mutual TLS but that setup is NOT advised. Mutual TLS enforces that only clients with the proper certificates can communicate with Kolide and the osquery-file-carve server. Since the Osquery file carve functionality does NOT support any type of authentication, I decided to implement mutual TLS. Overview Phase 0: Deploy client certificates Third, to request files from the osquery-file-carve server the user must be authenticated by Vault and given permissions to access that resource. Therefore to use this project in the default configuration you need an existing certificate infrastructure. Second, the Vault configuration enforces an HTTPS connection to the Vault server. First, the default configuration used by NGINX enforces mutual TLS (mTLS) for all attempts to access Kolide or the osquery-file-carve server. This project was designed with security in mind and therefore running this project is not as easy as docker-compose up -d. The goal of this capability is removing the need of the incident response team having to manually obtain the file from a remote machine. What is file carving?įile carving is when you instruct Osquery to TAR up a file on an endpoint and send the TAR to a server for further analysis. With Osquery, SQL tables represent abstract concepts such as running processes, loaded kernel modules, open network connections, browser plugins, hardware events, or file hashes. This allows you to write SQL-based queries to explore operating system data. Osquery exposes an operating system as a high-performance relational database. My hope is that this project benefits the community and provides an additional capability to Osquery that may not be supported by all fleet managers. The collection of these experiences and research has led to the creation of this project. This project has been a 6-month long effort that resulted in the creation of 4 blog posts, 3 Udemy certificates/courses, and 3 separate Github repos. This blog will provide a deep dive into the architecture of this project, design decisions, and lessons learned as an evolving incident response engineer. This project set out on a mission to provide an open-source Osquery file carving server for file uploads and downloads that could be used with Kolide. Furthermore, not all projects have the ability to support the Osquery file carve functionality, more specifically the open-source version of Kolide Fleet. However, Facebook did not release the server component of Osquery and that has led to the creation of many projects: Kolide, Uptycs, Doorman, OSCRTL, and SGT just to name a few. Facebook released an awesome open-source tool named Osquery that is being maintained by a thriving community supported by the Linux Foundation and several product leaders such as Kolide, TrailOfBits, and Uptycs. ![]() 1950 chris craft racing runabout7/21/2023 ![]() ![]() Trailer is NOT included The boat is also for sale locally, so I reserve the right to end the auction at any time if it sells. Indian and Chinese architecture influenced forms all over Asia and Buddhist architecture in particular took diverse local flavors. Ancient urban architecture was preoccupied with building religious structures and buildings symbolizing the political power of rulers until Greek and Roman architecture shifted focus to civic virtues. The idea of sustainable architecture was introduced in the late 20th century.Īrchitecture began as rural, oral vernacular architecture that developed from trial and error to successful replication. "Function" began to replace the classical "utility" and was understood to include not only practical but also aesthetic, psychological and cultural dimensions. ![]() In the 19th century, Louis Sullivan declared that " form follows function". Centuries later, Leon Battista Alberti developed his ideas further, seeing beauty as an objective quality of buildings to be found in their proportions. The earliest surviving text on architectural theories is the 1st century AD treatise De architectura by the Roman architect Vitruvius, according to whom a good building embodies firmitas, utilitas, and venustas (durability, utility, and beauty). ![]() Texts on architecture have been written since ancient times. For this reason, architecture is considered to be a form of art. Architectural works, in the material form of buildings, are often perceived as cultural symbols and as works of art. The term comes from Latin architectura from Ancient Greek ἀρχιτέκτων ( arkhitéktōn) 'architect' from ἀρχι- ( arkhi-) 'chief', and τέκτων ( téktōn) 'creator'. Beyond this, there is a complementary information block, which offers more information about the author of this document.įirst we bring structure to our document using the headings. Furthermore, we can see a list and a table. We can see images, which need alternative text. The text uses links, which can guide the user to a website. We can see that this document contains information like headings, which present the structure of our document. It is time to start InDesign and open our example document. As a con, or at least a limitation, we have to assert that metadata is limited to one language. If the alternative text is updated, the update is automatically inherited by all documents referring to it. All images can be searched for using the description text in the metadata, which can be extremely useful when handling a large number of images. The alternative text can be reused in multiple documents. ![]() Whenever the file is copied or moved, the metadata travels with it. Pros and cons of metadata in imagesĪ pro is that the alternative text becomes part of your image files. ![]() From now on the alternative text will travel with the image file wherever we move or copy it. To apply and save our modification, we click the little checkmark in the lower right-hand corner of the Metadata pane. We type "Alice, the Rabbit and the Mad Hatter at the tea party". For our purpose it is sufficient to add a description to the image. InDesign will be able to access any of these attribute values to add their content as alternative text. For our needs, we will have a closer look at the IPTC Core attributes to edit the Headline, Description, or Title. Each set is defined by different standards or media types. Metadata attributes are collected in different sets, such as File Properties, IPTC Core, IPTC Extension, Camera EXIF data and so on. Bridge indicates editable metadata attribute fields with a little pen on the right-hand side. Other metadata add additional information to the file without modifying the image itself. Some metadata attribute values cannot be changed without modifying the image, such as file format, creation date or resolution. On the right-hand side we see the metadata of the file. The program now opens a preview of the image. We can use the file browser to select the file in which we want to add the alternative text. After starting Bridge, the program opens a file browser for us. For our example, we will use Adobe Bridge as it is included as part of Adobe's Creative Cloud program suite. There are many programs on the market that can modify the metadata of image files. So let's see how we can add an alternative text to an image file. When we copy an image, its alternative description will be copied as part of the image file as well. If the alternative description of the image is stored as part of the image, we can reuse this description in many other documents without retyping the alternative text. Alternative texts can be stored in the form of metadata inside the image file. Images in accessible PDFs require alternative texts. Preparationīefore we start using InDesign itself, we need to think for a moment about the images that we want to include in our InDesign documents. So let's see how we can create accessible PDFs with Adobe InDesign. It will not explain how to layout, design or print documents. This chapter focuses on how to improve the accessibility of your documents. We assume that you have basic knowledge of how to use InDesign. Please note that this is not an InDesign course. In fact, as PDF was invented by Adobe, it is the most powerful tool for creating accessible PDFs on the market. InDesign has native support for creating PDF documents. Its primary target groups are graphic designers and desktop publishers. The software can be used for print or digital publishing to create documents such as posters, brochures, magazines, newspapers, books, e-books and interactive PDFs.
